APPENDIX A – EXTENDED BROOKS FAMILY GENEALOGY
A.10.0 BLUESKY Alberta
A.10.6 The Hubert Brooks Bluesky Homestead Applications
The online
Alberta Homestead Records for 1870-1930 lists two properties for Hubert Brooks just south of Old Bluesky.
BROOKS, Hubert |
Section 25 | Township 80 | Range 2 W | Meridian 6 |
Film # 2477 in Accession # 1970.313 at Provincial Archives of Alberta |
File # 3754073 |
and HOMESTEAD
BROOKS, Hubert |
Section 30 | Township 80 | Range 1 W | Meridian 6 |
Film # 2452 in Accession # 1970.313 at Provincial Archives of Alberta |
File # 3168678 |
HOWEVER this later HOMESTEAD is also listed for Hubert's son Joseph Brooks and the actual file has been filled out by Joseph. It is suspected
that Hubert's name became associated with this file because he had to submit a formal statement in support of his son's HOMESTEAD
application claiming that he had also resided on the property
since March 1920 along with his son Joseph.
As a reminder, the terms under the Dominion Lands Act, the federal government's plan for settling the North-West,
was that the homesteader gained (final) title to the quarter section if and only if after three years he had cultivated 30 acres and had built
a house on the land.
The purpose of these SECTIONS is not only to present original homestead documents related to Hubert's property but
also to get some insight into Hubert and the BROOKS family life at the time from responses presented in his own words to questions asked on the various forms.
