A.6.6 PHOTOS From St. John, North Dakota Early 1900s
The following sequence of PHOTOS illustrate some street scenes from St. John N.D. in the early 1900s to provide some
appreciation of the environment that the BROOKS family lived in.
Main Street, St. John N.D. circa 1908
Hubert Brooks' Store is the 3rd one on the left (under RED DOT) and burnt down in 1911
Fortunat Martineau developed a telephone system installed from St. John to Rolla, Dunseith and several other towns
that kept Rolette County citizens from paying the exorbitant charges of the telephone monoploy.
There could be up to 35 phones on one number which led to many combinations of long and short rings for each subscriber.
It also led to "listening in" on a neighbor's call!
