APPENDIX A – EXTENDED BROOKS FAMILY GENEALOGY

A.9 EXTENDED BROOKS FAMILY RETURNS TO CANADA – Saskatchewan

A9.2 SUMMER 1912: BROOKS FAMILY HOMESTEAD and PRE-EMPTION APPLICATIONS for LAFLECHE, SASKATCHEWAN

To encourage settlement in the west the Dominion Government of Canada offered a free homestead of 160 acres for a $10 registration fee. In order to receive the patent for the land the settler had to be a male 21 years of age or a woman who was the sole support of her family. Before being granted a patent the applicant had to be a British subject or a naturalized British subject, had to reside on the homestead for a period of time, usually six months of the year for three years, make improvements to the land by cultivating at least 30 acres of land, and erect a house worth at least $300.

The online Saskatchewan Homestead Index (and ENTER the name BROOKS) records the following entries for Hubert, Alfred and Aimé Brooks:
(Oscar Bolstad - husband to Nellie Brooks Bolstad - had a later homestead application entry dated 4-Jan-1916 -- discussed in the section on the Bolstads also there is an homestead application entry for Aurore Rousseau dated 29-Aug-1905 for NW-S36-T43-R22-W3 but not sure if he is related to the Rousseau's described in this story).
