The previous web page covered the direct ROUSSEAU family genealogy.
This web PAGE will cover the immediate
family genealogy of the HUARD, Grégoire, Turcotte and Plante familes that were to interact closely with Louis Rousseau and his children.
Luce Huard was to marry Louis Rousseau on August 18, 1846 in St Isidore, Dorchester, Québec.
Luce was the mother of Hubert Rousseau Brooks.
The following outlines the immediate genealogy of Luce Huard.
The Augustin Huard family would appear in the Canada 1851 Census (scroll over to middle column "1" starting at line 32) living in District Name: Dorchester (county); District Number: 7; Sub-District Name: St. Isidore; Sub-district Number: 86; Province/Colony: Canada East (Québec) (page 19) with daughter Luce having already left the family having married Hubert in 1846.
The 1861 Canada Census data for Augustin HUARD and family living in Dorchester Quebec (Canada East) was as follows:
In the 1871 Canada Census (starting line 6 page 27), father Augustin was not listed and presumably dead with son (also called) Augustin heading up the family still living in the St-Isidore district of Dorchester West.
AUGUSTIN HUARD, born Abt. 1797 in ST-ISIDORE,DORCHESTER,QUEBEC,CANADA. (alternatively St. Joseph, Levi, Quebec, Canada)
AUGUSTIN was the son of PIERRE-STANISLAS HUARD (alternatively Stanislaus Pierre "Eustache" Huard) (b. May 7, 1753)
and MARIE JOSEPHTE ROBERGE (alternatively Marie Robisson or even Robillone).
AUGUSTIN HUARD married LUCE HELIE dit BRETON (b. abt 1801) on August 14, 1827 in ST-HENRI DE LEVIS, LAUZON, QUEBEC, CANADA.
LUCE HELIE dit BRETON was the daughter of PIERRE HELIE dit BRETON and. GENEVIEVE VALLEE.
Children of AUGUSTIN HUARD and LUCE HELIE dit BRETON are:
The first documented presence of the Huard family in North Dakota was when sons Louis Huard and Joseph T. Huard
applied to become naturalized American citizens.

Marie Grégoire (born Nov 03, 1867) from Ste Marie de Beauce Québec (the future wife of Hubert (Rousseau) Brooks’) immigrated in 1879 (according to 1910 US Census records) to "North Dakota" USA.
The Grégoire family was quite well known in Québec with some historical significance.
Marie was the daughter of Gaspard Grégoire (b. 22–August 1829 Ste Marie De Beauce, Québec) and Adele Philoméne Marcoux (b. 4–May–1837 Ste Marie De Beauce, Québec). Her parents married in 1854.
It is unclear if this Grégoire family was descended from the Langudoc Grégoires (Francois Grégoire) who came over to Québec in 1685.

The 1861 Canadian CENSUS for the Gaspard Grégoire’s family was as shown in the image below. Note that Gaspard's father Jean-Baptiste was living with the family at the time.
1861 Canada Census
|
It’s also worth pointing out that Gaspard’s family name Grégoire was correctly spelt in the 1861 Canada Census. |
The 1871 Canadian CENSUS documented the Gaspard Grégoire’s family, including Marie and her various brothers and sisters.
And Marie’s 1871 Canada CENSUS entry indicates:
NOTE that the digitized translation of the original records indicates that the family name above was Grégaire. A look at the original records clearly indicates that it was Grégoire but was incorrectly translated into digital form.
However by 1881 the Gaspard Grégoire family does not appear to be in the 1881 Canada Census – or those that follow.
According to Dorothy (Grégoire) Vettel of North Dakota, the 1st Grégoire to come to Grand Forks County Dakota Territory was Tancred Grégoire who arrived circa 1878. He had been told of the opportunities in Grand Forks County by his mother Adele Philoméne Marcoux Grégoire. Adele in turn had heard about Grand Forks County from her brothers Frank (b. Feb 15, 1854) and Peter Marcoux who settled in Allendale and Brenna Townships in 1871 and 1878 respectively. (however it was not until 1878 that they built 12 ft by 12 ft log cabins and Frank and family did not move in until 1882)
After Peter and Frank Marcoux got the message back to Québec, not only did father and mother Charles and Sophie Marcoux (who were living in Québec District of Beauce East / Sub-District Ste-Marie) join the sons, but Adele's son Tancrede Grégoire and then the rest of the Grégoire clan would follow shortly.
Note that according to the CANADA 1871 CENSUS there was a Joseph Marcoux living in Dorchester East close to the Louis Rousseau family. It is NOT curently known IF Joseph Marcoux is related to Peter and Frank Marcoux. IF SO, since the Rousseau clan were in Grand Forks County circa April 1876 to March 1877 perhaps feedback from the Rousseau's, along with feedback from Louis Huard who had arrived in the US in 1864, prompted the Marcoux and Grégoires to immigrate to Grand Forks territory.
In the early summer of 1878, Tancrede Grégoire travelled from his home in Québec to Sarnia Ontario by rail. From Sarnia to Deluth, Minnesota he travelled by boat. This boat trip took 6 days. He came from Deluth to Fischer's Landing by rail, and then by stage to Grand Forks, Dakota Territory. For some reason his ticket was made out to Winnipeg Canada and they were going to take him there. He could not speak nor understand English, and had a hard time making the stage drivers understand that this was his destination. He arrived in Grand Forks on a Saturday. That night he stayed at the house of Sam Huard in Grand Forks. On Sunday following, his Uncle Peter Marcoux came to Grand Forks to attend church and Tancrede went home with him.
In the fall of 1878 Alphonse's mother,Philoméne, died in the family home in Québec.
The following year, 1879, Gaspard and son Siffroid came to Dakota and bought land in Sec 5 Of Walle Twp. In the summer of 1880, when Alphonse was passed 16, and he and his brother Hermanigille, who was also working for a farmer in Quebec, quit their jobs and came to Dakota to join the family.
Regardless, in a few short years the Marcoux, Grégoire, Rousseau/Brooks, Turcotte, Huard families would all be living in what would be called by the locals " Frog Pond" close to the Merrifield Road which ran down the border of Allendale / Walle and Brenna / Grand Forks Townships.
The first documented presence of the Grégoire family in North Dakota was when father Gaspard and several sons
applied to become naturalized American citizens.
(see
North Dakota Naturalization Records Index and enter Gregoire).

(NOTE slight difference is spelling of sons first names compared to the earlier CANADA Census.)
As an example, see below for the 1st August 20, 1878 filing for US Naturalization for family head gaspard Grégoire.
It would thus seem that the Grégoire family were in (Grand Forks) North Dakota at least by 1879
(which also correlates with the 1910 US Census records which state that the family immigrated to "North Dakota" USA in 1879).
Marie would have been 12 years old.
(As an aside it is clear from US Census records that Marie's niece Clara Grégoire was born in 1894 in North Dakota.)
Thus Hubert met Marie in Grand Forks N.D. sometime between 1879 and 1883.
Jumping forward to Feb 4, 1930, shortly after Hubert Brooks died, Marie's younger brother (by 1 year) Hyppolite Grégoire, now known as Paul Grégoire, a bachelor, arrived in Bluesky Alberta to assist Marie. Paul was an excellent handyman around the farm and helped his sister Marie immensely.

Brief Family History of Louis Turcotte
Like the Rousseau name, the Turcotte name, like many family names in post Crusades France bore witness to the close relationship between man and nature. The Turcotte name origin lies in the name of a bird, native to western France, called the Turcault. From this starting point last names would vary based on the occupation of an individual or could vary based on a geographic area of settlement of an individual. Thus Turcot, Turcault, Teurcot, Turcau, Turcaud,Turquant, Turquault, Turquot and of course Turcotte.
Abel Turcault (1631 - 1687) was born to Francois Turcot and Josephe Puinandeau in 1631 at Chateau of Richer, France. Abel Turcault left his village of Mouilleron De Pareds, Western part of France, for the port city of La Rochelle and came to Québec in the spring or early summer of 1658. Abel married Marie Isabelle Giroux (1641 - 1713) in 1667 at St. Famille Island of Orleans in Québec.
According to Rootsweb, all of the Louis Turcotte children were born in Ste. Marie Beauce Que. Canada.
Names of family members and dates and persons married are as follows:

Louis (b. 1814) - father of family | 1839 | Marcelline LeBreceque (b. 1821) - mother of Family |

NOTE that the Turcottes and Rousseau lived in the same Ste-Germaine du Lac-Etchemin sub-district of DORCHESTER as the Rousseaus. It was most likely here that Clara Rousseau met Eugene Turcotte.

Brief Summary of Louis & Rosalie (Marcoux) Turcotte's Immediate Genealogy
Final NOTE, Eugene's older brother Louis (b. 1841) (aka Lewis) (who came to Dakota Territory in 1883) and wife Rosalie (Marcoux) (b. Aug 18, 1884)
were married Oct 13, 1862 by Father Fountain in the Catholic Church in St Marie. This was a major festive event and they danced for a whole week after the marriage.
(Rosalie (Marcoux) Turcotte was the youngest of two daughters born in St. Marie, Bouce, Que to Charles and Sophia Marcoux who had come to Grand Forks County in 1884 from Québec.)
Since Louis had no established income, and had no home to take his bride, and since Louis' father's health was bad, it was arranged that Louis and Rosalie would live on Louis's parents farm in Québec
where they would remain for the next 21 years. During that time they had 17 children, 7 of whom died in infancy.
Prior to 1884, Cyrille (aka Cyril) and Eugene (aka Gene) Turcotte had come to Dakota Territory and secured land in
Allendale Township. In the spring of 1884 the Louis and Rosalie Turcotte Family, including Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marcoux, came to Dakota Territory and bought land at NW quarter of Section 2 of Allendale Township from
Eugene Turcotte.
Louis & Rosalie (Marcoux) Turcotte's daughter Clara (b. July 2, 1872) (d. 1938 Brenna Township ND),
would marry Alphonse Grégoire at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks on Oct 19, 1888.
Interestingly, according to the North Dakota Pioneer Files, Rosalie never learned to speak english and was able to communicate in french her whole life in Grand Forks County.
As of July 1939, in addition to Clara, the names of Louis & Rosalie (Marcoux) Turcotte's other children included;
Leonel (b. 1863) (died in 1936 in Spokane Wash);
Auguste (b. 1868) (d. 1938 Sask. Canada),
Mrs. Aleda (aka Lydia) Breton (b. 1864) (died 1935 Grand Forks N.D.) - see further info below;
Mrs. Eddelle Campigne (b. 1870) (moved to Brooks, Minn.);
Leon (b. abt 1879) (d. 1921 Thompson ND);
Alphonse (b. 1882) (d. abt 1903 Grand Forks ND);
Joseph (b. 1878) moved to Spokane Wash.;
Mrs. Odelle Joseph Huard (b. 1880) (Allendale to Grand Forks City);
Fred (b. 1883) (eventually moved from Allendale to St. John N.D.);
Mrs. Delie Lafade (b. 1889) remained in Grand Forks N.D.
...... 9 other children died in infancy making a total of 20 !

Brief Summary of Achille BRETON / Aleda (Turcotte) BRETON's Immediate Genealogy
Louis daughter/ Clara's older sister Aleda (aka Leda or Lydia), who had remained behind in Québec when the family moved to Grand Forks,
would eventually follow the family to Allendale Township after her husband died from appendicitus and her daughter died of pneumonia.
Aleda Turcotte met and married Achille Burton in 1886. The Burtons would "anglizie" their name further and be known as BRETON. Achille (aka Archie) and Aleda Breton would live on
NW quarter of Section 3, Township 150 N, Range 51 W , not too far from the Louis/ Hubert Brooks property. They were to have 15 children, 5 who died in the diphtheria epidemic.
Daughter Marie Armosa would become Mrs. Fred Huard, daughter Virginia would become
Mrs. Wilfred Huard, daughter Alice would become Mrs. Nelson Huard. Daughter Odella would become Mrs. Joe Fortin.
Achille (Archie) Breton died in 1931 at the age of 75 and Aleda Turcotte Breton died in 1934 at the age of 69.
Louis Rousseau's daughter Flora was to marry Marie Joseph Alfred "Freddy" Plante on June 18, 1891 in in St. John. N.D.
After Louis (Rousseau) Brooks died, Luce Brooks moved in with daughter Flora (and Flora's husband Freddy) in St. John N.D. until her own death in April of 1901. Flora was thus an important presence in the later part of Luce's life.
Alfred "Freddy" Plante was born in Ste. Marie, Beauce, Quebec on October 12,1865, a son of Joseph and Celanire (Cinq-Mars) Plante, both of whom were natives of Québec.
Fred's father, Joseph, was a merchant and business man on the island of Orleans, Quebec, and there passed away in 1884 at the age of 40.
Fred's mother, Celanire, remained a resident of Canada for about nine years longer until she moved to St. Paul Minn. where she passed away at the age of 56 on Feb 13, 1892 and was buried in St. Paul.(see Turtle Mountain Star Feb 18, 1892 news item at right).
Alfred Plante completed his education in the Normal School of Québec.
The CANADA 1871 Census captured the Plante family living in the St-Laurent sub-district of the Montmorency district of Québec. Note that father Joseph had passed away by 1871. Alfred was 6 years old at the time.

Once again summary information can then be extracted for each family member, for example, for Alfred Plante one would obtain:

| Transcription of Joseph Plante Obituary |
In 1884 Celanire Plante and family (including son Alfred Plante) came to the United States, locating at St, John, Rolette county. Alfred was nineteen years of age when he came with the family to North Dakota.
From that time forward Alfred was been dependent upon his own resources to make ends meet.
Freddy along with his brother-in-law, Fortunat Martineau, erected a one-storey building in St. John. The front of the building served as a store while two living rooms were arranged in the rear. Freddy worked as a clerk in Fortune Martineau's store for a period of twelve years, proving in the words of the book NORTH DAKOTA HISTORY AND PEOPLE OUTLINES OF AMERICAN HISTORY VOLUME II, "a most capable, faithful and reliable representative of the house".
Freddy's mother, Celanire Plante, passed away in 1885 at St. John, ND according to Joan Schafer. (Formal Minnesota Death Records has apparantly another Celanire Plante with the same birth year of 1833 passing away 13 Feb 1892 in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota - but Joan insists that this is not her relation. Although see OBITUARY notice at start of this section so I'm leaning towards the 13 Feb 1892 date!)
In 1896 Freddy was appointed postmaster of St. John under President Cleveland and occupied that position for four years.
Following the expiration of his term as Postmaster, Freddy entered the service of Hubert Brooks, then a general merchant of St. John, for whom he worked for five years, and during that period carefully saved his earnings until his economy and industry had brought him sufficient capital to enable him to embark in 1905 in a business for himself.
Accordingly in 1905 he engaged in merchandising in St. John and there remained for three years, after which he spent about four years in a similar business in Maza, Towner county. During the succeeding two years he managed the St. Anthony & Dakota lumber yards at St. John, covering the years 1913 and 1914.
On the 1st of January, 1915, he was again appointed postmaster of St. John. (see Section 8.3.1 for St John Postmasters)
Flora and Freddy moved from St. John to Minneapolis about 1927 to get better medical help for Freddy. Flora continued to live in Minneapolis after Freddy's death in December 1931 (buried St. Mary's Cemetery).
There are 2 accounts as to where Freddy died. The first has Freddy dying in Moose Jaw, Sask on 12-Feb-1931, the other based on brother Albert's North Dakota Pioneer File, has Freddy dying in 1932 at the age of 65 in Minneapolis.
As an aside, on Dec 26, 1907 Freddy's older brother Joseph Plante died of heart failure and congestion of the lungs at the age of fifty one years and 9 months. The obituary that appeared in the Turtle Mountain Star is shown at the right. It would seem that Joseph went throught the same hardships as Alfred in their early years following their father's unexpected death.
Flora and her daughter Rena and son Wendell, then moved to California about 1949 to live with sister Clara. Flora died in California in 1958. Also as an aside, Freddy's sister Marie Georgiana PLANTE became a nun, a Sister Josephine and was last known to be located in Edmonton, Alberta.
Circa 1939, Albert Plante's North Dakota Pioneer File had the following information about his PLANTE FAMILY sisters and brothers:
