Death of Maynard Brooks in Montreal
December 2, 1930 Maynard Brooks died in Montreal at the age of two years and five months. He was buried on
December 3rd in Montreal at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery -- the largest cemetery in Canada and the third-largest in
North America.
Maynard was buried in an area "PF" specially reserved for children (no specific grave stone) just north of the statue in area E/K4000
of the cemetery. According to the Cemetery, regardless if the child had been baptised or not, it was the "custom" at the time,
for families without a pre-existing "family cemetery plot", especially families that were not financially well-to-do,
to bury young children in common burial plots such as area PF in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges.

There are a couple of interesting points to note in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery
Burial Certificate for Maynard Brooks.
First, Maynard's name is spelt as (Ménard) - the French version of Maynard -- contradicting Laura's Baby Book
entry and other family history that the spelling is Maynard.
Second, Laura Farand's last name is spelt as Pharand -- something we have been told is incorrect.
Finally, Brooks is spelt as Brook.
Was this information entry done over the phone, or did some well-meaning clerk want to put a french spin on the input?

This was obviously a very sad time for Alfred and Laura Brooks coming almost 10 years after the death of the twins in Alberta.
What little solice could be taken at that time was that Hubert and Doris were healthy, active children.
Hubert Brooks at St. Nicolas High School and Plateau Academy in Montreal
Hubert Brooks was educated in Montreal, in French, attending St. Nicolas High School and then Plateau Academy between 1938 and 1940 where he was
keen at mathematics.
He was also a hockey player of note.
While in Montreal Hubert Brooks took up caddying at a local golf course to provide
money for his mother while father was away prospecting.
An extract from Hubert Brooks' application to the RCAF (image at right) provides a limited insight into his life in Montreal.
