A.12.1   The Alfred Brooks Bluesky Homestead Application for
               SW ¼ of Section 17 in Township 80 Range 1 West of 6th Meridian

The online Alberta Homestead Records for 1870-1930 lists one properties forAlfred Joseph Brooks just south of Old Bluesky.

As a reminder, the terms under the Dominion Lands Act, the federal government's plan for settling the North-West, was that the homesteader gained (final) title to the quarter section if and only if after three years he had cultivated 30 acres and had built a house on the land.

The purpose of this SECTION is not only to present original homestead documents related to Alfred's property but also to get some insight into Alfred's life at the time from responses presented in his own words to questions asked on the various forms.

                           Forms A & B dated 10-May-1916 application for property SW ¼ of Section 17 in Township 80 Range 1 West of 6th Meridian;
                           (Homestead located south of Old Bluesky, Alberta)
                           and Sworn Statement (2 pages) dated 25-February-1921 detailing activity on Homestead applying for a HOMESTEAD

KEY ITEMS OF NOTE FROM DOCUMENTS:
1) Alfred Joseph Brooks' Signatures at Peace River AB District Homestead Office
2) Current age at initial (10-May-1916) filing = 25 years of age and he was still single (family = 1) - although by the time he filed his
     SWORN Statement on 25-Feb-1921 he stated he was married with Wife.
3) Previous Residence was Lafleche Sask. where his Occupation was a farmer
4) Makes statement that he was born in North Dakota, America
5) Alfred started residing (?camping?) on HOMESTEAD May 10, 1916 however only built residence (log cabin) July 1917.
6) TIMELINE OVERVIEW:

25-April-1916     Date of Certificate of NATURALIZATION (as a Canadian citizen)
10-May-1916     Initial Filing for Homestead SW17-80-1-W.6th Meridian - Note that this was the same filing date that younger brother Aimé also filed.
10-May-1916 to 10-Nov-1916    Broke 2 acres on HOMESTEAD
July 1917    Built Residence on HOMESTEAD; 18ft by 20ft Log Cabin of value $200, Stable of value $150,
    Cattle Sheds of value $100. No fence on property.
June-1917 to 31-Dec-1917     Broke 18 acres and cropped 2 acres on HOMESTEAD; had livestock on property
June-1918 to 31-Dec-1918     Started residing on HOMESTEAD; full time. Broke 33 acres and cropped 18 acres; had livestock on property;
1-Jan-1919 to 31-Dec-1919     Broke nil acres and cropped 53 acres on HOMESTEAD; had livestock on property; (Alfred was married December 13, 1919)
1-Jan-1920 to 31-Dec-1920     Broke nil acres and cropped 53 acres on HOMESTEAD; had livestock on property;
    ( Twins Hubert and Maynard Brooks died at childbirth on 29-August 1920)
    (claims Wife -- Laura -- started residing on property full time as of 21-Dec-1920)
24-Feb-1921     Date of Application for Land Patent for HOMESTEAD SW ¼ of Section 17 in Township 80 Range 1 West of 6th Meridian;
    Neighbour Paul Salmond filed a supporting sworn statement the same day and
    neighbour Leo Walter Sergeant filed a sworn supporting statement a few days later on the 28th
14-June-1921     Land patent issued to Alfred by Land Patents Branch Department of Interior CANADA
29-Dec-1921     Son Hubert Brooks was born 29-December 1921 and daughter Doris (Freda Alma) Brooks was born 24-August 1923.

7) Unfortunately Alfred's handwritten response to Question 5 Where is he when not at Homestead is not that legible
    "In Vicinity - Farming with my ??Father??"
8) Naturalized as a Canadian Citizen on 25- April 1916
